Denny Hamlin wins at Martinsville

MARTINSVILLE, Va. — Hendrick Motorsports flexed its muscles Sunday, but Denny Hamlin’s team made the right call in the pits, propelling the No. 11 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota to victory in the Goody’s Cool Orange 500 at Martinsville Speedway.

Taking fuel only to pole-sitter Jeff Gordon’s four tires and fuel on the final pit stop for both drivers on Lap 388, Hamlin beat Gordon out of the pits for a restart on Lap 394, after Ken Schrader’s Toyota spread oil on the track to bring out the 18th and final caution of the race.

Jeff Burton, Brian Vickers, Carl Edwards and Casey Mears stayed on the track during the Lap 388 pit stop, but one-by-one Hamlin picked them off. He passed Burton for the lead off Turn 2 on Lap 427 and held it the rest of the way, as the 500-lap race went green to the finish.

As the frontrunners worked through traffic in the closing laps, Gordon passed Burton for second and finished 0.398 seconds behind Hamlin. Burton held onto third, followed by Jimmie Johnson (who rallied from a spin on Lap 296) and Tony Stewart. Dale Earnhardt Jr. finished sixth and Mears seventh to give Hendrick four of the top seven positions. Jamie McMurray, Edwards and Clint Bowyer completed the top 10.

“You got a clock, baby, you got a clock,” shouted crew chief Mike Ford as Hamlin crossed the line, referring to the grandfather clock trophy that goes to the winner.

The victory was Hamlin’s fourth in the series in 85 starts and the first in his home state. The win also broke a 24-race dry spell prolonged by a streak of rotten luck, the latest installment of which occurred two weeks ago at Bristol when Hamlin’s fuel pickup faltered with him in the lead on a green-white-checkered-flag restart. Hamlin finished sixth.

“It’s the first Virginia win for me, and well, finally the curse is over — I hope,” said Hamlin, who notched the second win in the series for Toyota . “We’ve had some bad luck these past few weeks. We’ve been so close so many times, and it feels great to finally break through.”

Like Johnson, Gordon lost track position in a mishap. Gordon’s occurred off Turn 4 on Lap 57 when the nose of his No. 24 Chevrolet was nicked during a four-car melee. Gordon restarted 32nd on Lap 65 and began a charge through the field; he regained the lead on Lap 269.

But the last two sets of tires didn’t work well with Gordon’s car. Handling issues and cold, wet track conditions made overtaking Hamlin impossible in the closing laps.

“It came down to pit strategy, and Denny and those guys definitely did the right thing,” said Gordon, who believed at the time that Hamlin had taken two tires instead of none. “I just couldn’t get going on those last two sets.

“I was trying to figure out why the car had no grip out there the last few laps. Then I got out of the car and realized that we were racing in the rain.”

Adhesion didn’t seem to be an issue for Hamlin, who won the race on old tires after opting for track position on the final stop. Hamlin also survived a mistake on Lap 215 when his car crossed the pit road commitment line on the backstretch, forcing him to pit from the lead to avoid incurring a penalty.

Hamlin restarted 19th on Lap 219 and, like Gordon, charged to the front.

Unlike Gordon, Hamlin stayed there.

Jeff Burton takes the win at Bristol

BRISTOL, Tenn. — Tony Stewart should have won the race. And when he didn’t, it gave Denny Hamlin a clear shot at victory.

But the Joe Gibbs Racing drivers failed to seal the deal — again — at Bristol Motor Speedway, and Jeff Burton and his Richard Childress Racing teammates were there to capitalize.

Burton scored his first victory at Bristol Motor Speedway and the first win of the season for Chevrolet, leading teammates Kevin Harvick and Clint Bowyer to the first 1-2-3 sweep in RCR history by pouncing when the JGR drivers faltered at the very end Sunday.

“We did the little things right,” Burton said. “That’s the sign that this team’s matured. That’s the sign of a team that’s ready to take advantage of situations. I won’t lose sleep tonight because somebody says, ‘We had a faster car.’

“All I know is we’ve got the trophy.”

A year ago, Stewart and Hamlin combined to lead 434 of the 504 laps here before mechanical failures sabotaged seemingly surefire wins.

This time, Stewart, Hamlin and Kyle Busch combined to lead 372 of the 506 laps, but Hamlin’s sixth-place finish was all they had to show for it.

Busch’s power steering failed, causing him to crash while he was leading midway through the race. Then Harvick wrecked Stewart with two laps to go, setting up a two-lap overtime sprint to the finish.

All Hamlin had to do was hold on for two laps and the win was his. But a fuel pickup problem on the restart allowed Burton to race past him and pull his RCR teammates along for the sweep.

“It’s just a shame. We had another win taken away,” Hamlin said. “Our cars just won’t pick up fuel. Everyone else’s does. It cost us the race. I could have held those guys off, as fast as the car went after it picked back up.

“This is so frustrating to have days like this.”

Stewart led a race-high 267 laps — 10 more than he did in this event last year — but again fell short because of questionable strategy and the contact with Harvick.

Stewart was chugging along toward the victory, trying to hold off the hard-charging Harvick and Hamlin, when Brian Vickers crashed to bring out a caution with 11 laps to go. Stewart thought he should pit for tires, but was overruled by crew chief Greg Zipadelli, who wasn’t sure there were enough laps left to warrant coming in.

So Stewart stayed out — along with Hamlin and Dale Earnhardt Jr. — while everyone else on the lead lap headed to the pits. Zipadelli instantly questioned the call.

“I don’t know if that was right or wrong,” he radioed Stewart, “but it’s in your hands now.”

Stewart was great on the restart with five laps to go, but Hamlin quickly chased him down and moved into first. Harvick, who restarted fourth with fresh tires, also closed quickly on Stewart’s bumper.

But as Harvick moved in for the pass, the cars made contact and Stewart went spinning into the wall.

“I just lost it there underneath of Tony. Just made a mistake,” Harvick said. “They can take it for what it’s worth, and move on.”

Stewart, who finished 14th, was livid on his radio after the accident but had calmed by the time he climbed from his car and was taking partial responsibility for the contact.

“I thought I left him enough room,” Stewart said. “I’m sure somehow it was my fault. I’m sorry I got in his way.”

The two are terrific friends off the track, and, ironically, are scheduled to appear together on Stewart’s Sirius Satellite Radio program on Monday night when Stewart is supposed to have his back waxed for charity.

Any anger between the two should subside before the show, but Harvick may have a lingering beef with Stewart’s spotter. After the accident, Harvick said he sent his spotter to apologize to Stewart’s, but the exchange quickly turned ugly.

“The first thing his spotter did was say he was going to whip somebody’s [behind] and if Tony didn’t do it, then he was going to do it,” Harvick said. “If his spotter wants to have a bad attitude about it, then we can all come down here and we’ll handle it.

“Nobody is going to have a good attitude about getting wrecked. I understand that from Tony’s standpoint. But his spotter was out of line and I didn’t appreciate it.”

Burton was the benefactor of all the action, sliding past Harvick and Stewart when the two made contact to move into second place. The wreck brought out a caution that led to the two-lap overtime sprint to the finish, with Hamlin now out front and Burton right behind him.

Hamlin’s car failed to take off on the restart, and Burton raced past him on the high side of the bullring with his teammates following all the way to the finish line.

“Harvick and Stewart got together there, and that opened the door for me to squeeze in,” Burton said. “When that happened, I viewed that as the opportunity. That was the door that opened. If we had any shot to win, then we had to jump through it.”

Busch, the series points leader and defending race winner, had a strong car most of the day but lost his power steering shortly after moving into the lead. Unable to steer the car as it seemed headed straight for the wall, he instead navigated it into a spin that allowed him to finish the race.

He wound up 17th, but retained his hold atop the standings and now leads Greg Biffle by 30 points. But it was the second straight race the power steering failed on a JGR car — Hamlin’s went last week in Atlanta — and Busch called for the team to find a new manufacturer on the steering boxes.

Dale Jarrett finished 37th in the final start in a points race of his 24 year career. The former series champion is retiring this season, and will race one last time in the All-Star race in May.

“Well, it wasn’t the finish I would have liked,” Jarrett said. “But I really can’t be too upset when you take into consideration the kind of career I have been fortunate enough to have.”

Bowyer wins rain delayed Sharpie

The winning move for Clint Bowyer in Saturday’s Sharpie Mini 300 Nationwide Series race at Bristol Motor Speedway was simply staying on the track when the rain started.

Bowyer and the eight cars behind him in the final running order remained on the track when NASCAR called the seventh caution of the race on Lap 164, after a light sprinkle turned to heavy rain. After seven more laps under caution, Bowyer waited out a stoppage of approximately 47 minutes before NASCAR called the race and declared him the winner.

It was Bowyer’s sixth victory in the Nationwide Series and his first at Bristol. Kasey Kahne was credited with the runner-up finish, followed by David Reutimann, Brad Keselowski and Mike Bliss. Jason Leffler, Kevin Harvick, David Ragan, David Stremme and Mike Wallace completed the top 10.

“It’s awesome — I take it any way I can get it,” Bowyer said. “Kasey raced me clean. He had the best car, but it’s not always the best car that wins. It’s just special. This is a racetrack that’s always been special to me ever since I’ve come here. It’s hard to race on, and you’ve earned it every time you roll into Victory Lane.”

Kahne had dogged Bowyer for more than 40 laps as the top two cars worked lapped traffic until NASCAR called the seventh caution on Lap 164.

“I should have pressed the issue a little more,” Kahne said ruefully, as he sat in his No. 9 Dodge during the rain delay. “I had the best car. I should be leading right now. I let him have it …

“I was just trying to do everything I could to get by him without running through him. Then the rain came.”

Bowyer’s No. 2 Chevy had led 119 laps to that point, in a race that had seen the cars of Martin Truex Jr. and Kyle Busch eliminated in the early going.

In what may be his only ride of the year in the No. 5 JR Motorsports Chevrolet co-owned by his friend Dale Earnhardt Jr., Truex checked up behind Carl Edwards and spun on Lap 13. Truex’s momentum carried him back up the track and into the path of Busch’s No. 32 Toyota.

Busch tried to avoid the spinning Chevy to the outside, but clipped Truex’s car and slammed the outside wall in Turn 3.

“I feel bad for those guys,” Truex said of the No. 5 team. “I wanted to do a good job for them. I feel pretty stupid running 10 laps and wrecking.”

Notes: After seven laps of caution for rain, NASCAR red-flagged the race after Lap 171 as the rain intensified. … One of the strongest cars in the early going, Harvick’s No. 33 Chevy had to return to the pits after stopping under caution on Lap 102 when one of his tire changers failed to secure a lug nut. That dropped Harvick to 19th in the running order, but by the time rain halted the race, he had worked his way back to seventh. … Reutimann posted his third Nationwide top-10 of 2008 and his third in four races at Bristol. … Keselowski’s fourth-place finish was a career-best in the series.
