Carl Edwards wins Sunoco Red Cross Pennsylvania 500

August 3rd, 2008

During a rain delay that stopped the Pennsylvania 500 for 41 minutes, driver Carl Edwards and crew chief Bob Osborne argued loudly about who made the call to come to the pits after an afternoon thunderstorm began to soak Pocono Raceway. In retrospect, both should be willing to take the credit, because the strategy earned Edwards his fourth Sprint Cup Series victory of the year and the 11th of his career. Tony Stewart was second, 3.858 seconds back. Jimmie Johnson was third, after starting on the pole, and coasting across the finish line after running out of fuel in the final corner.

Kevin Harvick rallied from a first-lap spin to finish fourth. David Ragan was fifth, followed by Clint Bowyer, Kasey Kahne, Mark Martin, Jamie McMurray and Jeff Gordon. Edwards’ chances of winning hinged on the race resuming after the rain delay, which came on Lap 131. Edwards, Johnson and Stewart were among those who had come to the pits on Lap 128, while 19 other cars remained on the track. When the race resumed, however, those 19 cars had to make two pit stops to one for those drivers who already had come to pit road. That proved to be the difference. Martin, Edwards and Johnson dominated the first two-thirds of the race, leading 53, 36 and 33 of the first 131 laps, respectively, but only Martin, who did not pit on Lap 128, was among the frontrunners when NASCAR red-flagged the race.

Jimmie Johnson wins Brickyard 400

July 27th, 2008

INDIANAPOLIS — Jimmie Johnson celebrated his second victory at Indianapolis Motor Speedway with a burnout.
Appropriately, one of his tires exploded.
Johnson survived horrendous tire troubles that made Sunday’s race a caution-filled debacle because the Goodyear product was not durable enough to withstand the lack of downforce on NASCAR’s new car and the speeds and surface of Indy.
“We came with the best tire we had for the conditions and we fell short. We’ll try to get it right,” said Greg Stucker, director of race tire sales for Goodyear.

Carl Edwards wins Missouri-Illinois Dodge Dealers 250 Nationwide Series

In the final 55-lap green-flag run, Edwards’ No. 60 Ford streaked away from the No. 20 Toyota of Joey Logano, taking the checkered flag 6.877 seconds ahead of the 18-year-old Joe Gibbs Racing phenom.
“That was unbelievable,” said Edwards, who picked up his second win of the season and the 15th of his career to the delight of a strong contingent of supporters in the grandstands. “It’s unreal. There won’t be a guy tomorrow who has a better day than me. Thank you everybody up in the grandstands. Thanks a lot.
“The 20 car has been great this year. Racing with them has been a challenge, but a fun one.”
The No. 20 Camry has nine victories this season with four drivers behind the wheel. Logano accounted for one of the wins, at Kentucky.
Jason Keller was third Saturday, posting his best finish since running second at Chicagoland in 2004. Jason Leffler was fourth, followed by Brad Keselowski, who recovered from a late-race accident to finish fifth. Rookie Landon Cassill ran sixth, a career best in the series.
Edwards was third for a restart on Lap 146 of the 200-lap race, chasing Leffler and seventh-place finisher James Buescher, both of whom had taken two tires under a caution caused by a wreck involving Keselowski and David Reutimann , who entered the race second and third, respectively, in the series standings.

Kyle Busch wins Nationwide Series race at Chicagoland

July 12th, 2008

"It’s definitely been a phenomenal year," Busch said. "It’s the kind of thing that doesn’t come along very often."

"It’s definitely an awesome feeling to be here [Friday night]," Busch said in Victory Lane. "We weren’t that good early in the race, but we made some adjustments, and this car just came to life."

Kyle Busch drove his No. 18 Toyota to a victory over Sprint Cup teammate Denny Hamlin in Friday night’s Dollar General 300 at Chicagoland Speedway.

Busch’s fifth 2008 victory and 16th of his career, gave Jor Gibbs Racing a series record tying 13 victories in a single season.  Hamlin was driving Todd Braun’s No. 32 Toyota on Friday.

In NASCAR’s top three series combined, Busch has 13 victories, six in Cup and two in the Craftsman Truck Series to go with his five Nationwide wins.

Brad Keselowski, second in the series championship standings, ran third and trimmed Clint Bowyer’s points lead to 183. Brian Vickers was fourth, followed by pole-sitter David Reutimann, Greg Biffle, Bowyer, Jeff Burton, Stewart and rookie Landon Cassill.

Eight of the top 12 drivers from the Cup Series were entered Friday night, hoping to get a feel for the track under different circumstances. Busch is on the pole for Saturday’s Lifelock 400 race in the Sprint Cup Series.

"It means plenty for [Saturday], that’s for sure," Busch said. "The biggest thing I learned [Friday night], the track didn’t change much. It got cooler, it gained grip and the balance didn’t change a whole lot. That was pretty cool to see."

Kyle Busch wins Coke Zero 400 at Daytona

July 6th, 2008

Kyle Busch edged Carl Edwards to win Nascar’s Coke Zero 400 race at Daytona International Speedway yesterday in a photo finish after a last-lap crash. Busch and Edwards were running side by side on the last lap when a wreck in the back of the field brought out the yellow flag. Nascar officials reviewed videotape and determined Busch’s Toyota Camry was ahead of Edwards’ Ford Fusion at the time of the caution.

“I can’t believe we’re here,” Busch, 23, said in a televised interview after the race. “We didn’t have the best car here tonight.” The win extends Busch’s lead in the Sprint Cup Series to 182 points over second-place Dale Earnhardt Jr., who finished eighth in the race. It was the Las Vegas driver’s sixth win of the year and the 10th of his Sprint Cup Series career. Busch finished second in the last two July races at Daytona.

Denny Hamlin wins Nationwide Winn-Dixie 250

July 5th, 2008
Comments Off

The cast of characters in Joe Gibbs Racing’s No. 20 Toyota is such a successful game of musical chairs that even Dale Earnhardt Jr. got confused. Tony Stewart took the No. 20 Camry to Victory Lane to open the Nationwide Series season at Daytona International Speedway in February. The car, sans Stewart, returned to there in Friday night’s Winn-Dixie 250 with Denny Hamlin behind the wheel.

The seventh of the season in the series — to win his second Nationwide race in the No. 20 car and his third of the season overall. In his final appearance this season in the car, which has won nine races with four different drivers, Hamlin notched the eighth Nationwide victory of his career. Busch stayed in line behind his teammate over the final two laps and came home second, followed by Earnhardt, Bowyer and Brad Keselowski. Kasey Kahne, Scott Wimmer, David Stremme, David Ragan and Mike Bliss completed the top 10.

“I thought Tony was in the 20 all night,” Earnhardt said. “I didn’t know Denny was in it — so congratulations, Denny.” The confusion carried over into Earnhardt’s post-race interview. “It was hard to beat those guys,” Earnhardt said. “Kyle and Tony were both really fast.” “I think the reason for the confusion was that the colors [on the car] are the ones [Tony] usually runs,” Hamlin said of the candy-apple-red No. 20 machine. “But my head’s a lot smaller than his.”

Earnhardt was third, closing on Hamlin and Busch when Colin Braun’s spin off Turn 2 caused the third caution of the race on Lap 99, setting up the two-lap sprint to the finish and turning a three-car race for the win into a free-for-all. Even though Earnhardt hung back on the restart on Lap 104, the top three positions didn’t change during the final two laps of a race that went five laps beyond its scheduled distance. Hamlin was grateful for his teammate’s help in getting to the finish line without a challenge.

“It feels good to do this in my final ride in the 20 car,” Hamlin said. “I’ve got to thank Kyle for sticking with me there at the end. The only way we don’t win this is if Kyle goes for the win. I knew Kyle could go for the win and maybe not succeed, but I knew, as long as he stuck on my bumper, we’d have a 1-2 finish.”

Kurt Busch wins at New Hampshire

June 29th, 2008

With Kurt Busch’s No. 2 Dodge parked behind the pace car on pit road and a rear brake-duct hose dangling onto the pavement, NASCAR called Sunday’s Lenox Industrial Tools 301 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway and anointed a victor who said he didn’t deserve to win.
“We weren’t the fastest car, and we didn’t deserve to win, but the record book will show that we won the Lenox 301,” said Busch, who was out front thanks to a fuel-mileage call when rain stopped the race after 284 of 301 laps.
The unexpected victory was Busch’s first of the season and the 18th of his career, as pit strategy scrambled the running order and deprived Tony Stewart’s dominant No. 20 Toyota, which spent 132 laps at the front of the field, of a chance to win.
“We had a pretty good car all day,” said Pat Tryson, Busch’s crew chief. “We topped off the fuel [on Lap 218] and were pretty close to making it to the end. We were hoping for some cautions, we got them, and I told Kurt that we were going to stay on the racetrack and take a gamble. [Sunday] it worked, and it got us a win.”
Michael Waltrip, who started at the rear of the field after a post-qualifying engine change, took second, followed by J.J. Yeley, Martin Truex Jr. and Elliott Sadler. Reed Sorenson, Casey Mears, Denny Hamlin, Jimmie Johnson and Bobby Labonte completed the top 10.
“It wasn’t the rain, it was strategy,” Waltrip said. “This is really great to get all those points, because we desperately needed them. But no smarter than I am, I wanted to go back racing, because I would have given up all those points for a win.
“I really wanted to go back to the green flag, because, as bad as I need those 170 points [for finishing second], I’m cognizant of the difference between first and second.”
Stewart and Johnson were running first and second when a hard crash in Turn 4 involving Dale Earnhardt Jr., Jamie McMurray and David Ragan caused the sixth caution (watch video). When Stewart and Johnson led the lead pack to pit road for fuel on Lap 274, 10 cars that had pitted under the previous caution (Laps 218-221) stayed on the track. That group included Busch, Waltrip, Yeley, Truex, Sadler, Sorenson, Mears and Labonte.
One lap after the restart on Lap 279, Clint Bowyer and Sam Hornish Jr. wrecked to bring out the seventh and final caution. As the cars rolled under the yellow flag, lightening flashed and so did fireworks between points leader Kyle Busch and Juan Montoya in Turn 1. The two drivers spun each other, a mutual expression of frustration for hard racing that had preceded the caution (watch video).
At that point the leading edge of a violent thunderstorm stopped the race and the ancillary nonsense. Montoya subsequently was assessed a two-lap penalty for rough driving, reflected in his 32nd-place finish.
